The second part of this series explores more of the different cultures at The College Academy. Through our investigation, we have realized that Washington Heights, a neighborhood mostly known for Dominican culture, is in fact much more diverse than it seems. We set out to find how TCA is not only filled with not just one or two cultures only but many different types. Here are two more voices from our community!

Eveling “Evelyn” Sotelo:

TCA HEIGHTS:
Con quién estoy aquí?

(Who am I with here?)

Eveling Sotelo:
Eveling.

TCA HEIGHTS:
Okay, Eveling, „¿de dónde tú eres?”

(Okay, Eveling Where are you from?)

Eveling Sotelo:
Colombia.

TCA HEIGHTS:
¿Estás feliz, que eres de Colombia?”

(Are you happy that you’re from Colombia?)

Eveling Sotelo:
Sí.

(Yes.)

TCA HEIGHTS:
¿Por qué?

(Why?)

Eveling Sotelo:
Porque Colombia es un país muy bonito, y también las personas son muy, eh, son muy amables, y por eso me siento orgullosa de ser de Colombia.

(Because Colombia is a very beautiful country, and the people are also very—uh—very kind; and that is why I feel proud to be from Colombia.)

TCA HEIGHTS:
¿Tú crees que ustedes tienen algo que nosotros no, como los Dominicanos, los Puertorriqueños, Ecuatorianos, como que tienen algo que nosotros no?

(Do you think that you guys have something that we don’t—like Dominicans, Puerto Ricans, Ecuadorians… like you have something that we don’t?)

Eveling Sotelo:
Sí, yo diría que sí, tenemos una cultura muy, o sea, muy diferente, y también la gente es muy diferente a como, eh, comparado con otros países, con personas de otros países.

(Yes, I would say so—we have a very… I mean, a very different culture, and the people are also very different compared to other countries—compared to people from other countries.)

Angelina Mariana:
Ángelina Mariana.

TCA HEIGHTS:
Mariana, ¿de dónde eres?
(Where are you from?)

Angelina Mariana:
De Colombia.
(From Colombia)

TCA HEIGHTS:
¿A ti te gusta estar en Colombia?
(Do you like being from Colombia?)

Angelina Mariana:
Sí, porque hay mucha biodiversidad.
(Yes, because there is a lot of biodiversity.)

TCA HEIGHTS:
OK. ¿Tú crees que en este piso hay muchos colombianos/colombianas o tú crees que hace falta eso?
(Do you think there are a lot of Colombians here, or do you think we’re missing that diversity?)

Angelina Mariana:
Hace falta. Hay poquitos.
(It’s missing. There are too few.)

TCA HEIGHTS:
¿Y cómo te sientes tú misma que tú eres colombiana? ¿Cómo te sientes? Orgullosa. Feliz con todo eso.
(And how do you feel about being Colombian? How do you feel?)

 Angelina Mariana:
Bien orgullosa, porque no es como normal verlo acá.
(I feel very proud because it’s not normal to see them around here.)
