TCA social studies teachers Ms Sweetser and Mr Martinez led a trip to Medieval Times on February 28 2026 in Lyndhurst, NJ. The Saturday field trip was held as part of the TCA history club. I was way for students to feel like they were back in Medieval times while enjoying a live action battle. TCA students who attended were picked for maintaining good grades and behavior. This trip was a free and fun reward for hard work in school.
TCA teacher Ms. Danielle Sweester organized the trip and spoke with TCA Heights.
TCA Heights: Why did you pick Medieval Times for the trip?
Sweetser: It kind of goes back to our goals with creating the History Club in general. So when we decided to make a History Club with the goal of bringing kids on trips [to have] experiences we think they normally wouldn’t have access to without us. Having them learn a little bit about history or New York culture. But also to have fun and maybe spark an interest.
I think for some students it could be a formative experience. Like the excitement of the show, the nights, the fighting, the jousting could spark an interest very easily in a kid.
TCA Heights: Was the trip a success?
Ms. Sweetser: I thought it was a success because a lot of kids really had a lot of fun screaming and rooting for the knight. I think for some students [our trip] could be a formative experience. Like the excitement of the show, the nights, the fighting, the jousting could spark an interest very easily in a kid.
To get a student’s perspective we spoke with TCA student, Joel Taveras.
TCA Heights: How was your experience on the Medieval Times trip?
Taveras: My experience at the Medieval Times trip was a new one. I had never been to an area like that before, and it was pretty cool. Honestly, I’d say it was great, because the side that I was on, like, you know, we were winning, he revolted, you know, he went against the king, or the alliance, and after that. He came back after all of us were thinking he was dead, he goes up against the victor, and then he loses, you know, it was great.
Freeman: Would you go again?
Taveras: Of course, if, you know, the opportunity is given to me!
If you are interested in joining the TCA history club speak with Ms. Sweetser or Mr. Martinez.
