This summer I decided to binge watch “The Vampire Diaries”. I first saw clips of it on TikTok and it piqued my interest. I finished the show a few weeks ago and I would definitely recommend this if you like supernatural teen dramas.
The Vampire Diaries was directed by Julie Plec and premiered September 10th, 2009. It is based on a book called “The Awakening” which was released in 1991. The show has 8 seasons with 13-22 episodes in each season. The show primarily focuses on Elena Gilbert, a popular high school student who does cheerleading, and is in a romantic relationship with a player on the football team named Matt Donovan. However it all comes crashing down when an accident takes place, changing Elena’s whole life.
Other main characters like Stefan Salvatore, Damon Salvatore, Bonnie Bennett and Caroline Forbes play pivotal roles in Elena’s lives, being there for each other through thick and thin even when they sacrifice their relationships for their own benefit. Every season the show changes up and a new problem arises. It’s interesting to see how each character’s problems affect the other characters, having to do with their backstories, secrets that get out and promises they can’t keep. One reason I kept watching the show was because of the dynamic between two characters, the Salvatore brothers, Damon and Stefan. These two have a relationship that you wouldn’t expect from brothers and see how their situations impacted them differently. I also like how different the two interact in the show. Damon Salvatore is portrayed as charismatic, arrogant and sarcastic, using his charm to get what he wants, showing his softer side for those he deeply cares for. Stefan Salvatore on the other hand is compassionate, protectful and broody. Wanting to change himself for the better while hiding dark secrets.
The acting in this show is really good, so good that I grew to dislike one of the main characters because he played his role so well. Jeremy Gilbert, brother of Eleana Gilbert, takes the previously mentioned accident harshly, and copes in an unhealthy way. His attitude towards other characters is what makes me dislike him, though he becomes better later on, the suspense in the first season also kept me watching to see what would happen next though it starts lacking in the later seasons. Everyday I watched multiple episodes of this show and I was captivated every time, it’s the type of show I would watch again for the first time if I could.
I would give this show a 8/10 because some of the characters have had their conclusion in the show rushed but its still an enjoyable experience.
