Memories of Ramapo

Alex Ramos, Reporter

On April 17-18, a group of TCA sophomores and their chaperones went on an overnight trip to Ramapo for Children camp, located in Rhinebeck, NY. On the bus many students did different things, such as listen to music, provided by chaperone Isaiah Martich, or talk with friends. Soon enough we arrived at Ramapo and got our belongings settled in the cabins we would be  sleeping in. The students began by splitting up in two groups– “Spongebobs” and “Patricks”.  After a few team-building activities it was lunch time which contained some chili. (The cafeteria staff wanted to make sure everyone was included so they had a vegan option.)

After lunch and a short one hour break it was time for a highlight of the trip: the high climb. Kids were broken into groups of three and had to work together to get to the top of a high ropes obstacle course.  For many of the students this experience was challenging and even fear inducing.  But overall students felt accomplished from the experience.

Next the camp counselors led the full group on a 1-mile hike through Ramapo’s “Green Trail”.  This walk in nature was strenuous but also beautiful.  Regardless, it was a unique experience for our city dwellers to get out into nature!

Following this, kids were given free time to do whatever they wanted. One student in particular, Analiese Ortez, upon reflection especially enjoyed herself during this free time. Additionally, trip coordinator, Samatha Melo, said the following “ My most memorable moment probably would’ve been choice time…Choice time was when the kids had the opportunity to choose whichever activity they wanted to…It was nice to see kids in their element and having a good time….”

Following this came the most memorable event, the campfire. Kids were then given fun riddles to see who gets to make smores first. After everyone made smores, then came the song contest which was a fun team building experience, in which the entire group was split into three teams and given prompts in order to sing a song. After that everyone returned to their cabins and hung out before sleeping.

Overall, our time at Ramapo was relaxing yet adventurous.  The next group of TCA students is sure to have a memorable time!
