Nature is everywhere in our life but do we truly know what it is worth? We need nature because it gives us oxygen during the process of photosynthesis. From 2001 to 2024 the state history shows in New York that a loss of 195,000 hectares of tree cover due to development, logging, and other natural and man-made disturbances. Clearly this is bad because that means we are losing our source of oxygen. Trees also prevent soil erosion, and mitigate climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide. This is why we have trees and plants because if we didn’t we would be dead a long time ago. (source: https://www.globalforestwatch.org)

But have you ever stopped to consider a second, just as important benefit of trees? Trees can actually make us happier. Take a walk in a local park and you’ll see what I mean. Spending time in nature will reduce stress and lift up our mood. According to the article “Why Trees Can Make You Healthy” by Jill Suttie, “The psychological benefits of walking through forests are very significant, and forest environments are expected to have very important roles in promoting mental health in the future,” the authors write. Indeed, various other studies suggest that the practice of “forest bathing”—deliberately spending time among the woods—can help us deal with the stresses and strains of urban living.”
Consider taking a moment out of your week and visit a local park! Here are some good local parks in Upper Manhattan and the Bronx.
