From Surviving to Thriving: A New Vision of the American Dream

What is the state of the American Dream?
From Surviving to Thriving: A New Vision of the American Dream

Immigrating to one of the largest and most powerful nations, the United States, is a long-cherished dream for many people around the world. It is the conviction to come to the United States to build a better life, with new job opportunities, access to education, and an improved lifestyle. That is why many long to come here and fight for that dream, because they believe the U.S. can offer them the freedom and opportunities they might not find in their home countries. Yes, it’s still possible to achieve the American Dream, but it has become much more difficult for many people due to inequality, strict immigration laws, and the high cost of living. Today, more than wealth, many people seek it for security, stability, and a dignified life.

Currently, I believe the American Dream still exists and can be achieved, but with the arrival of President Donald Trump, it has become somewhat complicated.  This is due to a rapid increase of people coming to the United States.  Thousands of immigrants enter the United States illegally, negatively impacting security, and resulting in crimes, robberies, and deaths of many immigrants. Many people from different countries come here illegally, which causes many problems, and the country is becoming overcrowded. An example of this is New York City. The president closed the border to take control of the country, and I believe he is acting appropriately. We must remember that there are many people who work honestly enter this country legally. These people remind us that with effort and dedication, the American Dream can still be achieved. My family and I are clearly an example of the American Dream. We legally immigrated to this country in 2021. We came in search of new opportunities, a new life, a new language, and an education, among other things. My mother, who was a teacher in my country for 21 years, made this decision for everyone. I consider it a very brave decision for the future of her children. My mother was a clear example; she came to work hard to achieve her goal: She wanted us to grow up in a different environment than my country, to have a more organized and peaceful life, and to have goals. Becoming a professional in the future was her clear objective: to help our family in the Dominican Republic.

For the American Dream to continue to grow or be maintained, the first thing we who immigrate to this country must do is respect its culture, religion, laws, customs, among other things. The American Dream is not just about arriving and seeking personal gain. It also means contributing something positive to the country: respecting its culture, laws, religion, and customs. But it is also an opportunity to share the best of ourselves, such as our education, values, and culture, and thus enrich this society by being an active and respectful part of it. But for the American Dream to remain alive, we must help ensure that everyone has the same opportunities. That anyone, regardless of their origin, can study, work, have a home, and live in peace. It’s about supporting those in need and creating a more just country, where we can all dream and achieve our dreams. When I arrived here, I felt very strange; I didn’t feel like myself in a new country, with a culture, a language, etc., but I never suffered or felt discriminated against. I had opportunities to study, health insurance, and other essential things. I felt truly welcomed. I felt strange since I was in a very different environment than what I was used to, a different language, culture among other things, but I welcomed it since I felt good with the treatment of the Americans, once I got lost on a train and I remember that I had only been here for 3 months, I did not know any English so I tried to talk to a young man, who did not know Spanish, he took his time to use Google Translate to help me, there I realized that here people help you no matter who you are, that’s why I felt good and grateful

That’s why I call on all immigrants, current and future, not just to dream, but to build: to educate themselves, to work hard, and to respect the laws and values of this country. And I call on Americans to continue opening doors, showing kindness, and offering opportunities, because the American Dream doesn’t belong to just one person, but to all who are willing to believe in it, work for it, and contribute to it.
