When we think of the American Dream, many ideas come to mind. Each person has a different understanding of the meaning of the Dream. The general idea of the American Dream changes overtime, depending on the events happening in America. Even though the American Dream is famously a search for wealth, today we must seek the American Dream as a quest for happiness and safety. Unfortunately this dream is getting harder to achieve. In my opinion, the new president, Donald Trump, has made the dream difficult to achieve, especially for immigrants and minorities.
According to the article “The American Dream is Real. I’m Living Proof” by Angel Eduardo, “Despite the struggle and the risk, [immigrants] choose to try their luck because they believed in the possibility of building something better and they succeeded”. This shows that even though the system can be harsh, people are still willing to sacrifice everything for a chance at a better life. From personal experience, I know that many people have to have multiple jobs in order to survive, especially here in New York where things are very expensive. Facing language barriers and unfair treatment, just to have something to survive and support their families. This can be a very difficult process.
If we want to keep the American dream alive, we must take action by supporting policies that protect immigrants. This means voting in local and national elections, advocating for inclusive legislation, and holding leaders responsible for creating a country where happiness and safety are possible for everyone. With our shared efforts we can make the American Dream accessible for all Americans.
