On Tuesday April 8 the George Washington Campus hosted a college fair. Students from TCA visited the gym where they met a variety of representatives from different colleges and post-secondary programs. Students had a chance to ask questions and to learn more about the different offerings of each school and program.
Some of the colleges present at the fair included:
- Columbia University
- BMCC
- Boricua College
- City College of New York
- Brooklyn College
- Guttman Community College
- Bronx Community College
To get the student perspective on this event, TCA Heights spoke with a selection of ninth graders. For many of the students, this was their first time considering life after high school. We first spoke with TCA 9th grader Maya. We asked “If you are going to college/university, do any of these look appealing to go to?” Maya replied, “Yeah there is, maybe the CUNY ones or the liberal art ones.” Maya is referring to the City of University of New York system; this includes universities that are exclusively in New York City. Do you think it benefits your peers? We also spoke with 9th grader Joel. We asked him “How do you feel about the college fair? Do you think it benefits your peers?” Joel replied with “I think it does, but it doesn’t have what I’m looking for” This shows that it’s a common thing that kids like him don’t really know what they want while looking for a college. But for Joel and other students I recommend them going to the College Counselor. For many ninth graders college might seem like a long way off but it’s not!
For more information about planning to life after high school, stop by the college office (room 234) and speak with Ms. Melo. It’s important to begin this process early.
