On November 27 during lunch all of the TCA students went downstairs to enjoy the annual dessert in the cafeteria. The desserts were displayed in advance so that when the students entered they could pick out something to eat. TCA staff donated and handed out dessert as an expression of gratitude and thanks and so the students could enjoy a sweet treat of their liking. Students enjoyed cookies, cupcakes, cake, banana pudding and even pie.
We decided to interview TCA Assistant Principal, Mr. George to find out about the origins of this tradition and how it impacts school culture. This is what he had to say:
“I definitely participated in the first one, I don’t remember whose idea it was. I wanna say this might go way back to an old assistant principal Ms. Bray. I think but I know definitely when Sigerson was here he came and he really liked the idea and he pushed the idea. So we have been doing it definitely at least since he’s been here, maybe a little earlier.”
“I just think it brings a smile to people’s face. I wouldn’t say in every case, not everyone likes dessert but I think since there is like a variety of things there everyone finds something that they like and plus we always expand the lunch period so students are like, ‘Great, we don’t have to go right back to class. We get to hang out longer than we normally do in the cafeteria.’ When students get to see teachers outside of the classroom acting normal like normal people just sitting around eating a piece of cake or helping serve a piece of cake it makes them seem more regular… same with students. Hey we’re both eating the same piece of cake. You like that too? I like that too, that’s my favorite cake. So a little bit of bonding I think.”
