This spring the students from The College Academy are exchanging emails with students from Tsetserleg, Mongolia. TCA students in Mr. Averill’s classes were partnered up with a group of 11th grade English students in Tsetserleg. The reason why Mr Averill started the email exchange is to give TCA students in class an opportunity to learn about other cultures and make connections with teens in far away places. The Mongolian students are being taught by Claire Bodger, an American Peace Corps volunteer serving in Mongolia. (www.peacecorps.gov) Students are sharing ideas about their favorite hobbies and interests, including music and pop culture. Students will be discussing community issues next, according to Mr. Averill.
TCA junior Keyana Stewart is a participant in the email exchange. When I interviewed Keyana about her experience with her Mongolian partner she said, “Sarantsetseg is like a friend because we talk about anything with each other, and learn new things about each other.” Through her email exchanges Keyana learned her partner is “…into ecology & psychology & that their province is mostly filled with flowers & greenery.”
