On Wednesday February 7th, Mr. Egloff’s period 2 class students spoke about “Climate action days”. The lesson focused on “waste”. Climate action days are four days where every NYC public school will showcase the importance of climate education and sustainability practice. With climate action days, the lessons are engaging the next generation of leaders, in classrooms and communities. When our teachers, building and school staff, and students come together to act, we can make a difference. The message of this lesson is to make the first generation feel the impact of climate change and the last generation that can do something about it. We can take care of the environment.
Today I had the opportunity to interview my earth science teacher Mr.Egloff. I was able to ask him questions based on reducing waste and he was more than happy to answer. The first question I asked him was what is climate action and why did you choose this topic to teach us today? Mr. Egloff then responded with “It’s a really important topic. We are living in an age where climate is forming very significantly. We are seeing the impacts and the increased intensity and frequency of weather events, we are seeing a lot more floods and sea level rise. And more intense hurricanes it is really important students know how they contribute to greenhouse gasses and also how they contribute to pollution. It’s important that we teach the ways they can lessen their impact in the environment. The reason I picked this lesson on landfills today is because we just started a landscapes unit and I wanted to try and tie it to the current curriculum. I feel like talking about the landfills and the potential problems associated with leachate was important in our unit.” My next question was what are some things readers can do to help reduce waste? He then said “Number one is trying to reduce first so if you’re at a supermarket think do you really need that same thing goes for clothing. Try and pick the option with the least amount of packaging (or) plastic. It’s a huge part of our pollution issues. Secondly you can try and recycle as much as you can like paper, plastic, glass, your electronics waste.” As you can see Mr. Egloff had a lot of important information to tell us and Ithink we should listen to his advice because it will be really helpful.
After interviewing Mr. Egloff we can all agree that reducing waste has such a big impact in our world today and we all need to do something about it. Something beneficial is if we help reduce waste reduction it will be a better climate change because all the plastic and unnecessary waste we are doing today and every other day is slowly killing our planet. However helping with waste reduction will be useful since it will help save landfill space by keeping useful materials out.
